DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) —
A British couple convicted of having sex on a Dubai beach
had their prison sentences suspended by an appeals court on Tuesday
in a case that exposed a cultural divide in this glitzy Gulf boomtown.


Michelle Palmer and Vince Acors were convicted and sentenced
to three months in prison in October for having sex outside of marriage,
public indecency and drunkenness.

The Dubai Court of Appeals upheld the guilty verdict but dropped their
prison sentences — though it ruled the couple must still be deported
from the United Arab Emirates and pay a fine of about $272 each.

"This is a good result," said Hassan Matter, the couple's Dubai-based lawyer.
"This means the law in Dubai is just and shows the judge
has a good mind and a good heart."

The two Britons, who are both in their 30s, met at an all-you-can-drink
champagne brunch before they were arrested in July.
Both previously admitted they were drunk but denied having sex.

The case revealed a fault line between Dubai's expatriate majority
and the city's conservative Arab, Muslim minority.
Public displays of affection are illegal in Dubai — a city that has worked hard
to cultivate an image as a party hot spot for Western tourists and businesses
in the Middle East but has a conservative legal code based
on Islamic laws and tribal rules.

The couple's trial prompted at least one Dubai five-star hotel chain
to issue an advisory for Western tourists on appropriate behavior.
The Jumeirah Group cautioned guests at the Medinat Jumeirah hotel that
"drunken behavior, especially outside licensed premises in the hotel, is punished severely."
It also recommended tourists be discreet with displays of affection in public.

"Anything more than a peck on the cheek could offend those around you
and even possibly lead to police involvement," the advisory said.

150 Florida teachers faced sex raps

ORLANDO, Fla., Nov. 16 (UPI) --
State records reviewed by the Orlando Sentinel show 150 Florida teachers
have been disciplined for sexual misconduct with students in the past three years.


The newspaper reported Sunday that while most of the incidents did not warrant
criminal charges, some did and resulted in the teachers being convicted.
The records also did not include teachers, both male and female, suspended or fired
for improper behavior off school grounds or with individuals who were not students.

Florida passed a law this summer requiring school districts to report such firings
to a statewide database, and prohibiting them from making secret deals
allowing an accused teacher to quietly resign.

"We're doing everything we can to educate all of our employees about
what is right and wrong, consistently,"
said Wayne Blanton, executive director of the Florida School Boards Association,
who added that statistics show schools remain an overall safe place for children.

LeBaron brothers in effort to change incest laws

Three sons of a southern Utah fundamentalist are launching a crusade
to change incest laws in three states.
They say their dad fathered at least four children with his own daughter
and is getting away with it because of a legal loophole.

The LeBaron brothers, none of whom are polygamists, are reluctantly stepping
into the legislative arena and exposing painful family secrets.
They believe incest is widespread beyond their eccentric family and is rarely prosecuted.

Elend LeBaron is not eager to talk about incest in his own family.
"It's embarrassing. It's humiliating.
But it's really our only way to stop this from continuing,"
he said.

Elend and two of his brothers are now pushing for attention because they want
to change incest laws. They say their father preaches the "Pure Seed Doctrine"
that he believes will bring back Jesus Christ.

"I've heard it stated by my dad and my brother that through polygamy and incest
will come the future leaders of the world kingdom,"
Elend said.

The brothers are convinced their dad fathered at least four kids with his own daughter.
"I mean, we have DNA evidence to prove that my dad is having children with my sister,"
Elend said.
But law enforcement hasn't been able to touch him.
"He already has argued that these children are the result of artificial insemination,"
Elend explained.

Just last week, the Iron County prosecutor officially aborted his investigation.
He couldn't find a way around the artificial insemination defense.
"We couldn't prove the elements of the crime.
That is, we could not prove the act of sexual intercourse,"
Iron County attorney Scott Garrett said.
The incest law requires that proof, even though female victims are rarely willing to testify.
"If you have a lack of witnesses that are willing to testify,
then the way the law is written makes it impossible to prove
essentially the act of sexual intercourse," Garrett said.

State Sen. Dennis Stowell is leading the charge to change Utah's incest law.
"It is a way out that we shouldn't allow," he said.
His new bill would accept DNA evidence without proof of a sex act.
"It is not fair to the children that are born to that type of a union.
Every society in the world has dealt with this issue.
Everybody knows that you don't reproduce with your own children,"
Stowell said.



Ross LeBaron sometimes lives in a home near Cedar City, sometimes elsewhere;
and that's why his sons are trying to change the laws in three states.
Last spring, Ross LeBaron was confrontational with Phoenix reporter Mike Watkiss.

Elend doesn't believe his father's artificial insemination defense.
But even if it were true, it wouldn't change the consequences for the children.
"Severe birth defects and severe social, psychological problems that will come
with this sort of destructive behavior," Elend said.
He says many polygamy groups preach and practice similar doctrines about incest.
Lawmakers plan a hearing on the proposed bill two weeks from today.

Teacher guilty of having lesbian sex with student

A teacher has been found guilty of pursuing an unlawful sexual relationship
with a female student.
Amanda Louise Thompson, 28, pleaded not guilty in the Brisbane District Court
to maintaining an unlawful relationship with a child between April 2003 and 2005.
Thompson fell for the 14-year-old student, who cannot be named,
when she was teaching at a high school south of Brisbane in April 2003.

During the trial the court was told the friendship developed into a sexual relationship,
with the pair meeting regularly for romantic trysts.
Prosecutor Todd Fuller said during the trial that Thompson had taken advantage
of a young girl who was fighting emotional and physical "demons" when they first met in 2003.
He said the relationship may have started innocently, with Thompson providing maths tutoring
and advice on coping with an eating disorder.
But, he said, it "spun out of control", and there had been an "imbalance of power"
in favour of  Thompson, who had been in a position of trust.
"This wasn't a Good Samaritan act ... this was much, much more than that," he said.

Mr Fuller read out extracts from a love note allegedly written by Thompson to the girl,
saying it was evidence the friendship between the pair had developed into something
beyond a normal teacher-student relationship.
"I love you very much and I always will," the note read.
"Please always remember that you mean the world to me and you always will."

Thompson's lawyer  Mark Johnson told the jury there was no denying the relationship
between the two was "bordering on bizarre at least".
However, he said there had never been anything illegal between his client and her student,
arguing that the student had dreamed up details of alleged incidents of sexual activity.
Mr Johnson said there were "significant" discrepancies between the evidence
the girl gave in court and her statements to police.

Thompson's sentencing was adjourned to a date to be fixed.
She was remanded in custody and ordered to undergo psychological
and psychiatric assessments.

Crazed Madonna Fans vs Guy Ritchie

Poor Guy Ritchie. Not only does the recently separated director
have to deal with new reports of his ex's secret rendezvous with A-Rod,
he also has his hands full with crazed Madonna fans.

According to The Sun, a quiet night of drinking away his sorrows at the local pub
took a scary turn when an intoxicated patron started hurling insults at him.
A witness at The Punchbowl tells The Sun,
"Guy was in the pub in good spirits and was laughing and joking over a pint.
This bloke seemed to be on the lookout for trouble.
He got a drink and started shouting about being a Madonna fan and ranting about the divorce.
It was like he just wanted to draw attention to himself."

Police confirmed to The Sun that officers were called to the pub
to diffuse the situation, but no charges were laid.
But the crazy didn't end there.
According to The Mirror, a 16-year-old Madonna fan was arrested
after he snuck onto the Manchester set of Ritchie's remake of Sherlock Holmes with a knife. 

A source tells The Mirror,
"The bloke was screaming about Guy and shouting, 'I love Madonna.' It was terrifying.
At first it seemed like a sick joke but it was soon obvious the knifeman was not messing around.
Luckily there were four security guards and two policemen who were able to overpower him."
The witness added,
"Guy was understandably upset, but carried on as if nothing had happened."

Good thing that living with Madonna for seven years has fully prepared Ritchie
for conflict resolution. Thanks to Madge's handy marriage rulebook,
one can only assume that he responded to his assailants by slowly approaching them
and calmly stating:
"I understand that my actions have upset you, please work with me to resolve this."

Charlize Theron wants to play with tom Cruise

Charlize Theron always gets the best costars, doesn’t she?
In the last year, she’s starred or signed on opposite Will Smith,
Viggo Mortensen, and Mark Wahlberg.
Now it looks like she can add Tom Cruise to the glittering list.
According to Variety, she’s in talks to star opposite Cruise in “The Tourist,”
Bharat Nalluri’s remake of the 2005 French thriller “Anthony Zimmer.”

Theron will play a female Interpol agent who uses an American tourist
in an attempt to discover the location of an elusive criminal, with whom she once
had a torrid love affair. It’s not clear whether Cruise will play the tourist, or the criminal —
but considering which role is in the title, we can probably guess who he is playing.

Compared to the original “Anthony Zimmer,” Theron’s role has been given an extra edge
of cool as an Interpol agent, as the French heroine was merely the criminal’s girlfriend.
You can’t expect Aeon Flux to play less than an Interpol agent,
especially if she’s up against Cruise.
It should be a lot of fun to see her tackle another action role, and give him the runaround.

Just a day after Kate Winslet revealed in a Vanity Fair interview
that she still feels like the "fat kid,"
critics in her home country are lining up to claim she still is.

But the svelte five-time-Oscar-nominee isn't having it:
"Kate is furious at suggestions that her body has been airbrushed,"
her rep tells PEOPLE exclusively.

The Sun ponders on its front page whether
"that magic airbrush has been at work again"
and the Daily Telegraph got a digital retouching expert to analyze the photos.
But the closest scrutiny comes from the Daily Mail,
which engaged a professional airbrush artist to perform an autopsy on Winslet,
who was shot wearing heels, black stockings and nothing else.

"She is in terrific shape and what you see is how she looks
or she would never have agreed to pose for those shots,"
adds her rep.

Why the British furor over the 33-year-old mom-of-two?
In early 2003 Britain's GQ magazine – a stablemate of Vanity Fair –
ran digitally "slimmed" photos of Winslet that drew much criticism.
Within days Winslet apologized.

"I just didn't want people to think I was a hypocrite
and that I'd suddenly lost 30 lbs. or whatever,"
the youngest ever five-time Oscar nominee said at the time.
"So I just came out and said, 'Look, I don't look like that'. I'm not mad at the magazine,
but I have no intention of looking like that."

Winslet's rep does admit that minor tweaks were done to the actress
for the photoshoot but insists the work was confined to skin shades only.

"The only retouching was the usual work on skin tone
that happens in every glamour shoot," adds the rep.
